Carbon Reduction Plan

Saunders

At Saunders, we acknowledge and understand that the climate and environment is fundamental to the wellbeing of local communities. We recognise that we have an impact on the environment every day, both directly through our business operation, and indirectly through our customers and supply chain.

As a provider of electrical, gas, and catering services, we are committed to protecting the environment and proudly commit to targets aimed at lessening our environmental impact, whilst continuing to deliver exceptional service to our clients. This Carbon Reduction Plan outlines our strategy to achieve measurable carbon reductions and support global efforts toward a sustainable future.

1. Introduction

As a responsible company, Saunders aims to reduce its carbon footprint by implementing sustainable practices across all aspects of our business. Our goal is to achieve a 75% reduction in carbon emissions across Scopes 1 and 2 by 2035. This plan serves as our roadmap, detailing our commitments, strategies, and actions to lower emissions in a measurable and transparent manner.

2. Current Carbon Footprint

2.1 Baseline Emissions

Our baseline emissions are calculated in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, covering three scopes:

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions from company-owned vehicles and fuel consumption.
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased electricity.
  • Scope 3: Indirect emissions from activities such as supply chain, business travel, and waste generation.

2.2 Current Data Collection

We regularly monitor and assess our carbon emissions using industry standards. This includes tracking fuel usage in vehicles, electricity consumption in offices and worksites, and waste management practices.

3. Goals and Objectives

Our primary objectives are:

  1. To reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 75% by 2035.
  2. To achieve net zero carbon in our Scope 2 emissions by 2027.
  3. To engage stakeholders, including employees, clients, and suppliers, in sustainability efforts.
  4. To promote the adoption of energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy solutions.

4. Carbon Reduction Strategies

4.1 Renewable energy: install the means to collect, store and prioritise renewable energy sources to become net zero carbon in scope 2 emissions

We are committed to progressing towards the use of renewable energy across our business operations, and to becoming net carbon zero in scope 2 emissions by the middle of 2025. As a business we will invest c£30,000 in the installation of solar panels and battery storage at our head office location. It is expected that this installation will provide the energy needed to power, heat and cool our offices, removing our need to buy in energy from the grid.

4.2 Climate focussed operations: taking action to ensure a climate lens is applied to all operations and operational decisions

We are committed to embedding the climate as a key consideration within our operational practices with the target of reducing our scope 1 emissions by 2035. We will enhance our processes to ensure environmentally efficient scheduling and route planning for our daily operations, as well as ensuring that an environmental focus is included in all decision making, for example decisions on vehicle fleet and fuel, vehicle sharing and travel commitments.

4.3  Recycling first: taking responsibility reducing waste and ensuring all materials are recycled and not sent to general waste

We are committed to the overall reduction in waste generated by our operation. We will implement systems and processes which reduce the production of waste, including removing the use of paper from our operation by fully digitising our systems by the middle of 2027. We acknowledge that our business operation will always generate produce that requires disposal, for example packaging and used parts. We commit to a recycle first focus, ensuring that we hold facilities that enable the separation of materials to allow for recycling and ensuring staff are adequately trained to recycle materials. To reinforce this commitment, we target a recycling rate of 90% by the end of 2026.

5. Monitoring and Reporting

5.1 Measuring Progress

We will employ the following measurements to ensure we remain on track to deliver our aspirations:

  • Annual assessments of carbon emissions using tools such as the Carbon Trust Standard or similar frameworks.
  • Regular progress reports shared with stakeholders, including clients, employees, and suppliers.

5.2 Continuous Improvement

We will review and update our Carbon Reduction Plan annually to incorporate new technologies, industry practices, and legislative changes.

5.3 Transparency

Our carbon reduction efforts will be documented and communicated publicly through our company website and social media channels.

6. Benefits of Carbon Reduction

Adopting a Carbon Reduction Plan benefits Saunders, our clients, and the environment:

  • Environmental Impact: Contributing to the global fight against climate change by lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Cost Savings: Reduced energy consumption and operational efficiency lead to lower costs.
  • Market Competitiveness: Demonstrating commitment to sustainability attracts eco-conscious clients and partners.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Staying ahead of government mandates and avoiding penalties.
  • Employee Morale: A sustainable workplace fosters pride and engagement among employees.

7. Conclusion

Saunders is committed to reducing its carbon footprint through strategic initiatives that prioritise sustainability, innovation, and accountability. By integrating carbon reduction into every aspect of our operations – electrical, gas, and catering services – we aim to lead by example and contribute to a sustainable future for our industry and community.

We understand that achieving our targets requires continuous effort and collaboration. With the support of our employees, clients, and partners, Saunders is dedicated to making meaningful progress toward a greener tomorrow.
